Masako is a Japanese politician, a 2nd term member of the House of Councillors in the Diet (national legislature). In 2007, she entered the Upper House where she has focused mainly on consumer rights. From 2012-2014, Masako served in the second Cabinet of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as Minister in charge of Support for Women’s Empowerment and Child-Rearing, and for Consumer Affairs and Food Safety, for Declining Birthrate and for Gender Equality. She is a member of the Standing Committee on Financial Affairs, and Special Committee on Reconstruction after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Power Issues.
